The hole in the upper left is a slideout tray for palm pilots and the like. The CD stack has a removable HDD bay, a DVD reader, a SCSI CD reader, and a SCSI CD burner. Below that is a floppy drive. The power strip is convenient, and the hole in the lower right is air intake for the HDD coolers.

The back of the case has a standard ATX backplane mounted in it. The #2 power supply is above this, wedged in the wood. A case fan blows air out the back.

From this angle you can get a good idea of the depth. It's 22"x22"x40" or so with the wheels.

The mainboard side, wide open. The CD drives and such are mounted in a metal cage pulled from the same case as the backplane.

The cardboard stack on the right cools the hard drives. A big 120mm fan and a 92mm fan feed lots of cold air in, which blows over the hard drives and keeps them running cool, even hot 7200 RPM drives.

A side view of the HDD stack. The huge drive on top is a SCSI drive, 1.2 gig unformatted, 976 meg formatted. Nothing special... but it is from late 1985. Also visible in the lower right corner of the case is a section of power supply #3.

The back opens up, but isn't really used for much.

The nails are driven in to rest the hard drives on. The spacing is such that there is about a half inch between all the drives for air to flow through. Open space is blocked off with cardboard so the air is forced through the drives.

The pull out tray was used for my Palm Pilot cradle, my camera serial cable, and a few other assorted widgets. A voltmeter monitoring line voltage also lived in here for a while.

The mainboard: Tyan Tiger 133 with dual P3/650s running at 866. The PCI blower cooling the Geforce 256 is there because the video card had a tendancy of overheating and messing up the screen display. It was a very hot running card with a very small heatsink/fan on it.

The lower intake fan for the hard drives is not something to put fingers into. Also notice the brown weather stripping. It sealed the gap with the doors, and helped reduce noise significantly.

A slightly better look at the mainboard. Dual slot 1 CPUs, 3 sticks of RAM (2x256, 1x128), and a loaded PCI bus. Interestingly, most of the RAM in there is "AMD Only" RAM - the board had a Via chipset, and could handle the high density "Via Only" RAM.

It's sticking it's tongue out. All the doors were secured with hook and eye latches.

So how big is it really? This is me, standing next to the case. It's impressive in scale.

Here the main guts are in - mainboard, CD drives, and such. It still has a lot of empty space: Excellent.

Just another shot from the side. No wheels are on yet. This thing sucked to haul up and down stairs. The whole hard drive stack is visible here. It's really rather tall.
